Returning the whale’s skeleton to La Plagette

2022–2023

A childhood memory of Sète: the half-buried whale skeleton in the garden of the Oceanographic Museum, brought back in concrete blocks. An installation designed for a park or a city centre, born of the Art Lab City residency.

Large-scale sculpture

“Returning the whale’s skeleton to La Plagette” is an installation designed to occupy a park or a city centre. Because of its modular composition, it is designed to adapt to each site. It is a prelude to a larger-scale project. Damaged cubes emerge more or less from the ground, evoking ruins… a buried world, perhaps extraordinary, is partially revealed. They can be transformed, according to each person’s wishes, into urban furniture or a variety of play areas.

Moreover, the Blocks are an ecological plea… cracked concrete and plastic, symbols and images of our civilisations, they are the remains of the future.

A childhood memory

As a child in Sète, we often went for walks in the garden of the Oceanographic Museum. There was a whale skeleton there, half buried in the ground. I tried to bring this memory back to life with this project.

One sculpture is still on show in the sculpture park of Château Vargoz, in Sérignan.

Genesis of “Returning the whale’s skeleton to La Plagette”

Initially two projects were envisaged: an installation of several blocks or a single monumental sculpture.

The beginnings of this work took shape during the Art Lab City residency.
